The Pseudepigrapha

My
copies of the monumental work, edited by James H Charlesworth

In Old
Testament biblical studies, the term Pseudepigrapha typically
refers to an assorted collection of Jewish religious works thought
to be written c 300 BCE to 300 CE.

The
Old Testament Pseudepigrapha: Vol. 1 & 2
Edited by James H. Charlesworth |

A priceless collection
of esoteric Jewish literature!
I have
two copies of the Pseudepigrapha, my original
one is the R H Charles version first published in 1913
and also
containing 'Fragments of a Zadokite Work', which is actually a translation
of the Damascus Document (CD), from the Cairo Geniza. Interesting to
read before the discoveries at Qumran (4QMMT). However, the Charlesworth
copies are eminently more extensive and to my great pleasure includes
'Pseudo-Philo (the 'Biblical Antiquities')' which R H Charles does not.
The R H Charles also includes 'Pirke Aboth (Chapters of the Fathers)',
which Charlesworth does not. There is no 'complete' list of
Pseudepigrapha,
for the most part editions seem to include those items that editors
wish to include. R H Charles, for example limited his period from 200BCE
to 100CE, covering a fairly narrow window of Second Temple period. His
inclusions probably fall very short of the extant MSS, more recent discoveries
excepted.
In 1983-1986
James H. Charlesworth edited two massive volumes and its documents provide
valuable background for Second Temple Judaism and the New Testament
and early Christianity. Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, we need to remember,
are fictional writings that claim to be written by a character in the
Old Testament or set in the same time period but not included in Jewish
or Christian canons. While Pseudepigrapha provide priceless information,
they also can be on the esoteric side, with such titles as The Eighth
Book of Moses, The Dialogue between David and Goliath, Questions of
the Queen of Sheba and Answers by King Solomon, and Quotations from
the Lost Books in the Hebrew Bible.
